Mods: Eye of the Storm – Episode One (Half life 2)

Continuing my recent binge of game mods, I came across this very impressive single player mod for Half Life 2, ‘Eye of the Storm – Episode One’.  This is the first part in a planned episodic release schedule for this mod, and it provides some of the most professional mod work that I have seen, at times you would be forgiven for thinking that you were playing an official expansion to HL2.

The mod is apparently a sequel to the previously released ‘Ravenholm’, and its opening video sequence details the protagonists escape from the area and how he made it back to civilization, showcasing some matrix inspired freeze framing and rotating cameras to show off the action.  This whole sequence is very well made, the only things that takes you out of the action is the fact that the wheels on the car that the hero drives don’t rotate whilst he is driving.  This is a very small niggle, and is in fact they only problem that I could find with the entire package which just shows how good the mod is.

I won’t detail the gameplay step by step, not in order to prevent ‘spoilers’ but just to let you experience it for yourselves.  It will feel familiar to anyone who has played Half Life 2 or any of the episodic expansions, as it doesn’t stray far from the established mechanics of light puzzle solving, vehicle pursuits and gun play.

The length of this mod clocked in at around 1.5 hours, which isn’t too shabby compared to some of the offerings that I have played.  It seems to be the perfect length, its not too long, so you won’t find boredom setting and it wets your appetite for Episode 2, especially with it’s cryptic ending.

I have been playing a large amount of single play mods for HL2 this past week, and this one easily stands out from the crowd as the best one.  I can’t wait for episode 2!

As usual the mod can be found over at, check it out!
