Mods: Dear Esther (Half Life 2)

Dearest Esther

Whilst looking for something to occupy myself this evening, I had a look through a few modding sites, which is something that I have not done for a very look time. I was surprised to see how improved the modding community has become since I last paid it any attention, and there were a wide range of mods that sparked my interest.

The first of these mods that I am going to mention here is the amazing Dear Esther, a single player mod for Half Life 2.

The gameplay of the mod sees you traversing a desolate, oppressive island whilst listening to spellbinding and haunting voice over work that narrates the game story through reading out what seems like diary entries and poetry.

The overall effect of the gameplay, narrative and audio is something that feels like an interactive and lonely version of Jeff Wayne’s War of the Worlds, but with the prog-rock sound track replaced by an excellent sound track that sounds along the lines of God Speed you Black Emperor or A Silver Mt. Zion. I don’t want to mislead anyone with the War of the Worlds reference, this game does not feature extra-terrestrials or disasters, its just the albums narration that compares to this mod.

I won’t spoil the rest of the mod for anyone that wants to play it, as it an experience that is best savored unspoiled.

The mod can be found at
